This term in Science, the Year 1 students have been learning about materials, their properties and how materials can be changed for a purpose. Year 1D was fortunate to have a visit from Clare’s mother, Helen, who brought samples of materials that are used in hospitals to help sick and injured people. Helen told the students about thermoplastic, alginate and plaster and how they are used. She demonstrated how the materials are changed by wetting them. The students had great fun using the materials to make casts of their hands and make imprints of objects. Lots of scientific language was used to describe the properties of the materials and the changes that occurred. Comments included very scientific; really, really fun; fantastic; exciting and very, very interesting.
We are very lucky to have such wonderful parents who care enough to give their time and expertise to extend our students’ learning.
